READY TO FISH GEAR

We tie all the sets ourselves using high quality materials. They are quite labour intensive, so there is a limit to the quantity and speed of production. We therefore suggest that you order early. As we tend to "Make to Order" there could be a lead time of a couple of weeks before we are able to despatch.

There are three types of "Ready to Fish" gear we are able to supply :-

1)  Mackerel Sets

      A -  "Fairwater" Range

Fairwater Fishing started off supplying Heavy Monofilament Mackerel Sets to local fishing boats which were using hydraulic gurdies and fish stripping equipment.
As the gear has proves so successful and popular, we now supply commercial fishermen all over the UK and Ireland.

All our gear is hand made by skilled tiers here at Fairwater Fishing using quality, time tested methods and materials, ensuring a neat finish which catches well, and stands up to the extreme stresses and strains associated with commercial handlining or jigging.
We use VMC  Hooks and Triplefish which are both long running trusted Companies supplying time proven high quality products.

We try to hold as much stock as possible.
However due to large number of possible variations, and the high demand for these products, much of the time sets are tied to order so please allow us a few days to complete before despatching them to you.

Each "set" consists of a single length of heavy monofilament line up to about 10 metres long, known as the "mainline", with  knots tied in it at specific intervals into which lighter "hook lengths" or "snoods" are tied.

Each set we supply is individually packed, and clearly labelled, for easy identification with the following information :-

Number of hooks, Hook size, Hook make and pattern, Strength of hook length & mainline monofilament, Spread or gap between the hooks, Customers name.

Each set is tied with an odd coloured bottom hook, so the user can quickly work out which way up to set the line up.

We create and supply mackerel gear in three main strains for different applications.

2)  Monofilament Longline

Monofilament longlines are proving to be very popular with small boat fishermen targeting Pollack and Bass inshore.
It is relatively cheap to set up, and the cost of the whole line is covered by the first few fish caught.
The lines can be worked on a small scale without machinery or modifications required to the vessel.

These are very versatile as they can be fished along the seabed, floating at or near the surface; or anywhere in between for just about any species.

Hook snoods are attached to swivels held in position on the mainline with beads and crimps, to give a strong, neat and cost effective finish.

Anti-chaff tube is used wherever possible to prevent wear on the mainline.

More and more fishermen are now using these longlines with artificial baits.

This removes the hassle associated with first catching then storing any quantity of mackerel ( or similar fish) on board.

This method requires the line to be anchored, as it relies on tidal movement to make the lures "swim".

A selection of lures being used successfully in this way is available on the "Lures" page.

We also supply all the component parts loose for self assembly.

Our monofilament longlines are now assembled with best quality all stainless steel swivels.
Each line is made from good quality 1.8mm (350 lbs) monofilament.
It is made up of five sections (20m approx), each with five hook attachment points ( approx 4m apart), making a complete mainline that is approx 100 m.
The monofilament longline is supplied alone. Hook length monofilament, hooks, and/or artificial baits will have to be bought separately.   All are available on this site.

3)  Single Rigged Gummimakk Lures for Pollack

Jigging and trolling for Pollack is becoming increasingly popular with commercial fishermen, and there are many fishermen already earning an excellent wage line-fishing for Pollack.

Fairwater Fishing supplies a range of "Ready to Fish" Pollack lures, suitable for handlining, gurdies, jigging machines, and trolling with dive boards.

This is our modern take on the traditional favorite Norwegian lure.

The usual barrel swivel is replaced with a better quality crane swivel, and we use food grade ‘new generation’ silicone tube which is made especially for us here in the UK.

As well as being tough and tear resistant, it is memory free and it is is softer and more supple than PVC.

Each lure is supplied ready rigged onto a section of monofilament trace, with a joining swivel of the appropriate size.

Simply join together as many sections as required to make up the length of trace with the number of lures you want to fish.

Stop-knotted joining ends allow very quick and easy joining knots to be tied without the worry of knots slipping.

Actual lure spread on set when fishing is approx 1 metre.
